that influence one another in a cause and effect relationship. each entity has its own colour, form and movement, which work in unison with the soundtrack. different forces such as gravity, wind and turbulence affect the shapes at selected moments within the sound. this creates precipitation by altering each form, or by altering the position of the camera. the shapes each have a beginning and an end, the death of one shape influences the birth of the next, the result is a string of mini big-bangs. the piece investigates cycles of change and the possibilities found in the metamorphosis between shapes. 'press +' uses a combination of analogue and digital techniques. the shapes were improvised, utilising a matrix of points and lines. twelve shapes were selected and linked seamlessly in 3d software . they were then animated in synchronisation with the soundtrack. eventually each frame was printed with an inkjet printer on recycled paper. key moments were then further animated using ink and media arts area in the school of art. both artists depart from an animation practice but have wound up in very different places, working across a range of platforms from hybridised performance events to festivals and motion graphics. together their work still shares the foundation of the animation discipline, the bringing to life and anthropomorphising of that which is not alive and not human. for inanimate both artists will combine sculptural and screen elements to complicate the relationship between screen and physical space, the human and the non-human, the banal and the uncanny. both artists are inspired by naturally occurring forms and for this work have found the point at which they intersect with the pure geometric structures rendered in the glassy non-space of 3d animation. their respective practices choreograph new relationships between inanimate objects and the viewer to find means to image their ongoing interest in geometric abstraction, fantasy, ritual and metamorphosis. for inanimate they have created a space between theatre and installation to house their own, unique, creation myth. inspired by speculations on the origin of life and evoking the imagery of scientific modelling, the ‘artists impressions’ of contemporary ‘documentary’ television and creation sequences of science fiction, inanimate creates a world at the dawn of time. benjamin and zoe intersect geological and human timescales, to transform the gallery space into a void where the audience orbits the rock to witness the beginnings of life as their small world turns from day configurations. 'stopcycle' sculptures can be configured into many cyclical patterns. they behave as though they are eating themselves, whilst sinking into the ground and returning to the surface. mimicry is a formal experiment in geometry and motion, and a representation of time and repetition. future development of a 'stopcycle' will include a lifesize timelapse temporal sculpture juxtopsosed with architecture, experience of seeing light without light actually entering the eye. most vision researchers believe that phosphenes result from the normal activity of the visual system after stimulation of one of its parts from some stimulus other than light. for example, grüsser et al. showed that pressure on the eye results in activation of retinal ganglion cells in a similar way to activation by light. an ancient, discredited theory is that light is generated in the eye. a version of this theory has been revived, except, according to its author, that "phosphene lights are [supposed to be] due to the intrinsic perception of induced or spontaneous increased biophoton emission of cells in various parts of the visual system (from retina to cortex)". a continuation in experiments in shape and motion,
